Googie Burger
Centennial
Olympic Park, next to the
Fountain of Rings
Opens at 11a.m. weekdays, 10a.m. weekends
The future of family-fun dining has arrived! Located in
Centennial Olympic Park, the new Googie Burger offers fresh burgers,
fries and
shakes. This walk-up spot features an exhibition kitchen and plenty of
shade.
Now, there isn't any indoor seating; but who wants to stare at walls
when you
can dine al fresco in the middle of the park anyhow?
Named for its ‘50s-esque
architecture, Googie is reminiscent of mid-20th century
futurism. (For reference, think the Space Needle and The Jetsons.)
Despite
receiving certain flack for this older design style, it adds a visual
texture
to the park, delightfully accenting the Aquarium's façade.
In addition to one epic
peach
milkshake, Googie also serves up fresh ground burgers cooked to
order. (Unbelievably, each burger is less
than $5!)
Currently, there are four options: original, bacon and cheese, veggie
and
chicken. The
Original and Beefy Pig varieties are topped with American cheese and
a
secret, mustard-based sauce. (The
Beefy
Pig also has a bit of pulled pork on top - so delicious!) The
Veg
Out patty is black bean and brown rice-based with cheese on a wheat
bun. The day's pièce de résistance, however, was the Flyin'
South chicken burger. Crisp, juicy and grilled, the chicken sandwich topped with
bleu
cheese crumbles and a spicy sauce became a fast favorite. Should you
find
yourself in need a refreshing adult beverage, each sumptuous shake can
be
spiked with vanilla vodka; the joint also offers a nice wine list and
local
beers. Another interesting note: the hand-cut
fries are cooked in peanut oil, rendering them cholesterol free!
Located directly adjacent from the Fountain of Rings, this
new burger joint is sure to be a hit with kids. Incredibly convenient to
most
of the downtown hotels as well as Philips arena, I wholeheartedly
believe
Googie will enjoy immense success.
