Few things herald the beginning of Fall like football season.
Now, what goes best with those epic gridiron battles? To me, nothing
says
"victory" like a slab of meticulously topped pizza and a frosty glass of
craft
beer. Check out my top picks for the best slices and drafts in town!
Prime pizza picks:
Savage
Pizza
Little Five Points +
Avondale Estates
Made fresh and from scratch daily, this spot has
been an L5P
mainstay for 20 years. Treat your inner beast to a feast with one of the
specialty
slices. My favs are the Cajun and, for a simple delight, the Tomato
Basil.
SLICE
Midtown
+ Downtown
The low-slung sofas and mood lighting make this a
perfect place
to relax after a night of dancing. Named for the (sometimes slightly
maniacal)
chef, the Raging Agee pizza is my all-time favorite. The menu changes
frequently,
depending on Agee's mood, so be sure to download the at-the-moment
offerings.
Everybody's Pizza
Virginia-Highland
+ Emory
Village
Tucked stree-side into the heart of Virginia-Highland,
this joint
offers delicious dishes and fantastic people watching. Since its 1971
debut,
this little place has won many accolades, including "Best Pizza in
America" from NBC's TODAY Show. While
they made their name with crispy-bottomed thick crusts, I'm a fan of the
Thai
Chicken, served Pizza Crisps style. (i.e. with a very thin and
crispy crust.)
Antico Pizza
Midtown
Recent
winner of "America's Most Authentic Pizza" according to
the Festa della Pizza in Naples, Italy, this is the go-to place for true
Italian cooking. Truthfully, you can't go wrong with any
menu item, but if you must have a suggestion, I'd opt for the San
Gennaro with fresh sausage, pearl onions, sweet red peppers and buffalo
mozzarella.
Best brews:
Red Brick Brewing
Company
Westside
After switching hands in 2007, Red
Brick now offers "beer from
around here". Found only in the Southeast, it truly is a must-try. Of
the four
regular brews, the flagship Brown is my favorite. Inside you'll find a
full
body, booming with malt flavors, perfectly underscored by faint remnants
of
coffee and chocolate.
SweetWater Brewery
Midtown
This
brewery's delightfully laid-back attitude puts you in the 5
o'clock mood before you ever take your first sip. Whether you want
something
sweet with a citrus-y finish, or a robust round with deep wooden notes,
you'll
find it here. Since all the beer is unpasteurized to preserve flavor,
it's only
sold in a few cities. While the IPA is a year-round favorite, I like to
put my
faith in the latest
Dank Tank series - a 1,500 gallon tank of
experimental brews, released only once.
5 Seasons
Brewing Company
Westside (OTP: Sandy
Springs + Alpharetta)
Quite an interesting take on the "going
green" trend, this cool
spot only brews with locally sourced, organic ingredients. While I
eagerly
await a peach-inspired concoction, one must-try is the hugely hoppy,
citrus-y
Big Boy Double IPA.
Fun Fact: 5 Seasons offers a specially brewed,
gluten-free beer as well as gluten-free pizza!
Sleuth Side Note: I
think Fellini's and Mellow
Mushroom
deserve a nod. While both are technically "chains" they've managed to
preserve
the integrity of their ingredients and creativity in their menus. From Fellini's,
I highly recommend a slice of The White
with mushrooms on top. At Mellow
Mushroom the Kosmic
Karma leaves me feeling good all
night long.
