  • Lookingglass Alice - From Pawn to Queen

    Lookingglass Alice
    Alliance Theatre
    Through May 2
    Tickets start at $20

Based on Lewis Carroll's timeless tale, Lookingglass Alice "puts the wonder back in Wonderland". Performed at the Alliance Theatre's reconfigured stage, kids and adults alike will be mesmerized as Alice slips and stumbles, twirls and tumbles through the looking glass! Full of acrobatics and antics, this fresh spin on a childhood comedy is a can't-miss.

Tickets start at $20 and shoot as high as $50 - but fear not! The Culture Vulture has found a few secret specials. Use promo code "INDUSTRY" for $10 admission to the 8p.m. show on Friday, April 2 or the 2:30 matinée Saturday, April 3. If those dates don't work for you, use promo code "DISCOVER" for 15% any show. Be sure to check out the Discounts & Packages page on the Alliance site for delicious dinner specials, courtesy of your favorite Midtown restaurants.

David Catlin, director of the Lookingglass Alice Theatre Company and also responsible for writing this stage adaptation, was quoted as saying "It's my way of telling my daughter ‘Slow down, savor childhood', and also reminding grownups how to play." In his rendition, Catlin sends Alice through the looking glass over her mantle, into a chessboard world. Passing tests and trials, the play chronicles her journey through ridiculous circumstances, tracing her path from Pawn to Queen. Reconstructing the Alliance stage to accommodate the high-flying fancies of Carroll and Catlin, this performance will leave you starry-eyed, clutching the edge of your seat!
  • Driven to Perfection

    The Allure of the Automobile
    High Museum through June 20
    Ticket prices include museum admission
    Adult: $18; ages 6-17: $11; ages 65+: $15

Want to know what drives you? Visit the High Museum's The Allure of the Automobile - a premier exhibit of 18 cars which defied the current technology and design standards. Defining the modern art of mechanical sculpture, these cars have been a vehicle of the imagination for decades. Whether you're a connoisseur or casual observer, these works from global masters such as Bugatti, Duesenberg and Ferrari are sure to please!

Easily the haute couture of the automotive industry, these "rolling works of art" were certainly created for an affluent few. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the record-breaking, award-winning creations: a number of the cars were owned by Hollywood heros such as Steve McQueen.

As a visual testament to the Golden Age of engineering, these cars chart innovative advancements from the late 1930s through the mid-'60s. Although production ceased in light of WWII, and shifting aesthetics ventured toward the smaller, nimble sports cars of the late 20th century, these curvaceous roadsters continue to awe audiences. Presented by the High, these pristine productions are inspiring innovations of engineering, creativity and beauty. Stop in today for your glimpse of perfection.

  • The Drama of Daughters and a Lust for Land

    King Lear
    The Shakespeare Tavern
    Through April 4th
    Adult admission starts at $24

Presented by the nation's one and only Shakespeare Tavern - King Lear is the latest endeavor of this Original Practice concept. Part playhouse and part pub, every inch is swathed in the rustic, European charm which adds that final layer of finesse onto Shakespeare's works. Grab your favorite brew, a scrumptious snack, and join the fun as the Tavern players demolish the ‘fourth wall' practice, delivering their lines as they roam about the room.

"First and foremost a professional theatre", the Tavern offers audiences of all ages a truly unique and pleasurable experience. An alcoholic menu is available, but dinner nor drinks purchases are required to attend the show. Seating is first come, first served, so plan accordingly. Shows are performed every Thursday through Sunday, and tickets start at $24. It is strongly recommended that you purchase tickets in advance, otherwise your only option is the last-minute waiting list.

Widely accepted as one of Shakespeare's finest achievements, King Lear explores the derisive, devious acts often provoked in family members of the elderly. While lechery and treachery are certainly no laughing matters, the silver-tongued wordsmith casts the severity of grief and greed into comedic relief with well-placed quips and boggling character disguises. Hold fast to your sanity as you traipse through the minds and hearts of King Lear and his brood!
