ATL is becoming such a great food town. Lil shops are popping up all over town to prove it. Who likes to shop for food or has been to any of these places? The newest addition to the ATL is The Mercantile in Candler Park. A cozy little place with a focus on local products and great service. Sandwiches come highly recommended and prepared foods are always available too. There's always stuff out to taste.

Other spots: Little's Cabbagetown Market takes you back and their committment to local is unparalleled. Toscano & Sons Italian Market in West Midtown brings Italy to the ATL and their Italian wines are fab! Savor Foods in Buckhead has an enormous cheese selection. The Barrelman in the heart of Midtown is attached to Eno's Wine Bar and you can get a unique wine selection there along with expert advice. H&F Bakery has the best pastries in the city and award Chef Linton Hopkins is behind the artisan style and cute lil products avail there. Alon's Bakery is an Atlanta institution and the double chocolate chip cookies are my addiction. Star Provisions has always set the bar in the ATL.

I've been to all of these places. Am I leaving any out?

Ever wanted one of those wild Pharoh headress thingys? Well, let me tell you they are on sale at the exhibit's gift shop which is ideally located at the end of the tour. The whole place is filled with pieces designed from the treaures inside so look for rings, necklaces and all things Egyptian. The exhibit, on display at the Boisfuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center, is a wonder of ancient finery and mistique.

Hello all, my wife and I just moved to Atlanta from Florida and we are looking for a reputable fence contractor. We purchased a home in the Dunwoody area and the HOA requires ornamental iron fencing. So far we have only had one estimate from Atlanta Fence Company. Can anyone on this board recommend this company or any other fence companies? We absolutely love this area, and I must say it was a long time coming!

H&M coming to Atlantic Station

I read recently on an Atlanta, GA blog that a H&M clothing store will be opening in Atlantic Station on June 13. H&M is supposedly known for having a great selection of fashionable, yet cheap men's, women's and children's clothing. The blogger says that the store gets new items in frequently. She compared it to Old Navy, except that it is more European and larger.

She also mentioned that there is already a H&M at North Point Mall (but only women's) and I was wondering if anyone had been there? What is the selection like, and would you recommend H&M?

I found that the Legendary Shopping Packages are a great way to experience it all in ATL shopping.Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza are my favorites. When you buy a package you get a lot of extras like a gift card and discounts at the stores. I found a really cool Jimmy Choo bag on my last trip.

I got to talk with Edward Fleming while I was at the Atlanta.net party last week and he said one of his favorite places to shop in Atlanta is Lofty Pearls. He said this is a high-end household store with items from bed ensembles to soaps. So if you're looking for nice things for your home, maybe you should check Lofty Pearls out! Thanks Edward!

I agree with some of the comments- Kudzu in Decatur, Paris on Ponce are really great for antique/vintage shopping. You could spend a whole day in either place, rummaging through some very cool stuff.

Fresh Pine for Christmas

The outdoor artist market at Atlantic Station has sucked me in the past couple weekends, particularly the live Christmas trees for sale. Never mind my place is small, the mess of falling needles and my total lack of experience with "real" Christmas trees. Perhaps the thought of smelling fresh pine would make the season feel more alive (no pun intended), especially with all the joggers dashing through the streets in shorts last week - a far cry from winter weather.

Being frugal and more practical I ended up only purchasing a wreath, especially as the men working the stand humored me two weekends in a row and were willing to cut me a deal. But had I gotten a tree, they would have attached it to my car OR given me a shoulder strap so I could take the bundled tree home on MARTA. The thought of wrangling with a tree on the Atlantic Station shuttle and on the train was almost humorous enough to warrant the purchase.

There are several locations around the city selling live trees...including at Atlantic Station and their sister location in Little Five Points next to Front Page News. You can support local schools with the tree lot across from John Howell park in the Highlands. I'm still debating whether it is best just to stick with plastic trees, which don't involve the direct death of a tree, but there is the fact that buying a local fresh tree supports local harvesters. Joy Johnston on About.com has a nice comprehensive list of local tree buying locations.

You can also recycle your tree on January 8, 2008 to ease your conscience. Join the city-wide effort to make mulch and support wildlife, which are much better options than burning your tree during one of Atlanta's worst droughts. Here is the list of Christmas tree drop-off locations. Enjoy the pine, and if you've had any luck replanting your Christmas tree after the holidays, do let me know.
